Live Like A Dying Man

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

by Bo Sanchez

One day, I attended Mass and the priest was in a hurry.

He either was very tired. Or had diarrhea.

Because he was going through the motions and doing it quickly.

So very different from my friend Bishop Honesto Ongtioco.

For years, I’ve admired how the good bishop celebrates Mass. He does it with so much passion. Like he speaks every word with fire. And he acts every gesture with love.

Two weeks ago, I had lunch with this great man.

I asked him why he does his Masses this way.

He said something so profound, I’ll never forget it.

He said, “I always imagine every Mass to be my first Mass and my last Mass.”

For me, the key word is imagine.

He added, “What if I died in my sleep tonight? I really don’t know, do I?”

Today, I invite you to take a very special 30-Day Retreat with me.

No, I’m not asking you to go to a Retreat House with me. You’ll just do it wherever you are. (I’ll talk more about it later.)

Using the power of your imagination, you’ll allow death to be your teacher.

Let me tell you how…[To continue reading, please CLICK HERE]

Don’t Give Up; You Are Closer Than You Think!

Monday, June 29, 2009

by Joel Osteen

The Scripture tells us about a man who was paralyzed and couldn´t walk at all. One day, he heard that Jesus was in town teaching in a nearby house. This man knew that if he could just get to Jesus, he would be made whole. So the man convinced four of his friends to carry him on his bed over to that house. The only problem was that when they arrived, it was so crowded that they couldn´t even get in the door.

What a disappointment. What a letdown. I´m sure those men were tired by this time. They could have easily gotten discouraged and thought, "Too bad. It´s not going to happen." But not the paralyzed man, he was determined! He wasn´t going to let anything stop him from getting to Jesus. I can just imagine his four friends turning around to take him back home when he says, "No, no. We´re not going home just yet. There has to be a way! I´m not leaving until I get my miracle!"

This man understood that you are closest to your victory when you face the greatest opposition. He wasn´t about to give up. He said to his friends, "I´ve got an idea—take me up on the roof, cut a hole in it, and lower me down so I can have a front row seat right in front of Jesus." Those four men hoisted him up on the roof and did exactly that. And do you know how Jesus responded? He wasn´t upset because they made a mess. He wasn´t frustrated because they interrupted His message. No, it says that He saw their faith and instantly healed the man!

You know, a lot of people give up when they face opposition. They see the "crowds" and turn around and go home. "Oh, I tried but they told me no." "I tried to get my degree, but the college was full." "I tried to get that new home, but they wouldn´t give me a loan." "I tried to quit this addiction, but it´s just too hard." No, you´ve got to be more determined than that. You have to have a "never say die" attitude. Don´t stop trying. Keep pressing through because just like this paralyzed man, you are close to your miracle!

Friend, no matter what you may be going through today, no matter how you may be feeling or what you may be facing, remember there is victory in store for you. Maybe the door has been closed, maybe it seems like there are crowds of people in the way, but if you can´t get through the door, why don´t you try the window? Better yet, why don´t you be bold like this man, and just go through the roof?

Keep trying, keep believing, keep hoping, keep pressing into Jesus because you are closer than you think to the miracles He has in store for you!

Honor GOD in All That You Do

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"Remind people to be submissive to [their] magistrates and authorities, to be obedient, to be prepared and willing to do any upright and honorable work" -Titus 3:1, AMP

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

In what ways do you honor God? A lot of times, people think “I go to church to honor God. I read my Bible to honor God. I sing and clap to honor God.”

And yes, those are ways to honor God, but did you know that you honor God just as much when you get to work on time? You honor God when you are productive each day and honor the people in authority over you. You honor God when you excel in your career.

Actions speak louder than words. When you give your very best in the workplace, your whole life is giving praise to God—it’s one of the best witnesses you could ever have. Just showing up with a good attitude, friendly, organized, being your best—people will notice there’s something different about you. They’ll want what you have.

As believers, we should set the standard in all areas of life. People should see the depth of your character and your spirit of excellence and know that you are a child of the Most High God. Make the decision to honor Him in all that you do because you are His representative in the earth today!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, I choose to honor You in all that I do. I choose to set the standard and do my very best. Thank You for the privilege to be Your representative. I love You and bless You! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Set the Standard

Saturday, June 27, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men" -(Colossians 3:23, NIV)

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

In today’s society, many people have accepted mediocrity as the norm. They do as little as they can to get by, always looking for the easy way out. If the boss isn’t watching, they’re playing on the computer. They simply go to work to pick up a paycheck, and then wonder why they’re not promoted and don’t see increase. It’s because God doesn’t bless mediocrity, He blesses excellence.

Whatever we do, we should do it to the best of our ability. We should set the standard. Remember, we are ultimately working for the Lord. He’s the one who put those talents and abilities in us. We are stewards of the gifts He’s given. Other people may show up late. They may complain. They may cut corners. But don’t sink down to their level—you are working for Almighty God. You are called to excellence.

I encourage you today, stay determined. Stay focused. Whether you’re a waitress, a truck driver, an architect, a police officer, or a CEO, do it to the best of your ability. God is the one who brings promotion. When you set the standard, He’ll raise you up and pour out His blessing in every area of your life!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, today I choose to set the standard. I recognize that the work I do is for You. Keep me close to You by the power of the Holy Spirit and help me to rise up higher in every area of my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Expect God to Act

Thursday, June 25, 2009

by Joel Osteen

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"[A Psalm] of David. Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity; I have [expectantly] trusted in, leaned on, and relied on the Lord without wavering and I shall not slide" -(Psalm 26:1, AMP)

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Did you know that God loves to hear you call upon His name? He has ways to meet your needs that you´ve never imagined, and He´s just waiting for you to ask expectantly. Are you expecting God to act on your behalf today?

So many people pray with an attitude as if they are trying to hit a dartboard blindfolded! They know the target is there, they have an idea of the general direction; they just hope they´ll just get somewhere close. But understand, when you get into God´s Word and declare His promises over your life, it´s like taking the blindfold off and walking straight up to the bull´s eye! When you pray with expectancy according to God´s Word, you´ll hit the target every single time.

What are your needs today? Find the promise in God´s Word that addresses those needs. Then, expect God to act! He is faithful to His Word, and He´s just waiting to show Himself strong on your behalf.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

"Heavenly Father, today I come to You with an attitude of faith and expectancy. I know that You have good plans for me, and I choose to come into agreement with Your Word. Thank You for hearing my prayers as I wait patiently for You. In Jesus´ Name. Amen."

Dare to Believe

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

by Joel Osteen

There's a gentleman in our church named Dr. Todd Price. He and his family have been a part of Lakewood for many years. A while back, they started taking mission trips overseas.

They would fill their suitcases with medicines that the drug companies would donate to them. Over time, their outreach has grown bigger and bigger and now, we are a partner and supporter of theirs as well.

Not long ago, Dr. Price gave me an update on what's been happening this year with his outreaches. The report started off by saying, "With the economy being down and people struggling in their finances, we didn't see how we could continue at the same level."

Then he went on to say, "We didn't. We increased. We expanded." In just the first five months of this year, Dr. Price and his missions organization have donated over $66 million dollars worth of medicines to needy people all over the world. That's above and beyond what they ever expected!

Here's the key: Dr. Price and his family live breakthrough–minded. They believe God can do anything. They are constantly daring to take those steps of faith. You know, missions work is not even his main job. He has a successful medical practice and does the missions work on the side.

Just recently I got the word that somebody gave Dr. Price a beautiful building, a warehouse on the freeway, to house all of his medical supplies. Every time I turn around he's getting more equipment, more opportunities, more outreaches. But 10 years ago, he could have never imagined leading such a powerful, world–wide organization. It all started when he and his family stepped out and dared to believe God.

Maybe you have a desire in your heart to step out and do something for God. Maybe you don't see the resources, or understand how it will all work out. Just start by taking that first step of faith. Dare to believe God. Use what you have in your hand and God will multiply it back it to you in ways you never imagined!

Free Favor Abounds

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me…to proclaim the accepted and acceptable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the free favors of God profusely abound]"
-(Luke 4:18–19, AMP).

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

In the Old Testament, every 50 years the people would celebrate what they called Jubilee. It was a day of freedom and restoration–once–in–a–lifetime event! But now, because of what Jesus has done, we don´t have to wait 50 years to experience Jubilee. We can live in Jubilee every single day.

I believe this is your year of freedom. It´s your year to be released from every bondage, every debt, and anything that would hold you back. It´s your season to be released from sickness, depression, addictions, and worry. It is your year to see the free favor of God profusely abound! It’s your time of restoration.

Let that sink deep down into your heart today. Dare to believe that He wants to see you free. Surrender every area of your heart to Him and watch the bondages of the past break off of you so you can live in Jubilee in every area of your life!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father God, thank You for Your favor, grace, and mercy upon me. I know that You paid a precious price so that I can walk in freedom and restoration in every area of my life. I choose to receive everything You have for me so that I can live in Jubilee. In Jesus´ Name. Amen.

How To Become A Superstar

Sunday, June 21, 2009

by Bo Sanchez

Last week, I got a body massage that I’ll never forget.

I was massaged by “Ate Guy” (Not her real name).

I call her “Ate Guy” because though she looks like a woman, I have a suspicion she’s really a guy. In fact, she has the strength of 10 guys in her little female body. But I’m getting ahead of my story.

One of my friends recommended Ate Guy to me, praising her skill to the highest heavens. My friend said, “Ate Guy’s singular mission in life is to remove your lamig (cold). She’s obsessed. She goes berserk when she finds lamig in your body. She’ll not stop massaging you until the lamig is pulverized under her fingers.”

With that glowing description, my wife and I contracted her services.

By the way, let me educate my non-Filipino readers. Lamig means cold, but it means more than that. Sometimes, it’s also called hangin or air. When Asians get sick, we say we have lamig or hangin in our bodies. It doesn’t jive with modern medicine, but this belief has lived on for centuries.

In fact, it’s not uncommon that when you get massaged using this traditional method, you dighay and diglo at lot. Translation: Dighay is burp. Diglo is butt burp.

On the agreed time, Ate Guy came to our house.

The Torment Begins

I studied Ate Guy.

She was 4’11. Mid-thirties. Bordering on thin. Girlish ponytail.

Pretty harmless, I thought to myself.

My wife placed a mattress on the floor of our living room and lay down. She wanted to go first. As Ate Guy started massaging her, I sat a few feet away, writing on my computer. I looked on Marowe’s face: She was so relaxed. She appeared half-asleep. I got excited. I wanted to relax and sleep too...[click here to read more]

The Basureros (Rubbish) Kids - an Inspiring True-to-Life Story

Saturday, June 20, 2009

-Author Unknown-

Ever since I was diagnosed with having a possible heart enlargement, I have followed a strict regimen of physical exercises. I jog during week days and take a long ride biking to the mountains every Sunday.

But this Sunday turned out to be a special Sunday for me. While I was on my way to the mountains of Busay (Cebu) hoping to strengthen my heart by this exercise, I personally encountered a heart-breaking scene that changed me.

I had already passed by the Marco Polo Plaza (formerly Cebu Plaza Hotel) when I decided to stop to buy bananas at a small carinderia located along the road. I haven't taken any solid food that morning so I wanted some fruits to have the needed energy to get to my destination - the mountain top.

I was almost done eating with a second banana when I noticed two children across the street busily searching the garbage area. "*Basureros*" I said to myself and quickly turned my attention away from them to sip a small amount of water. I couldn't care less for these children, to make it straight, I do not like them and I do not trust them at all....  To continue reading, please CLICK HERE

Being Excellent in the Workplace

by Joel Osteen

I saw an article not long ago that talked about how to reduce your risk of being laid off. There were three main criteria that businesses considered when determining who should stay and who should go. The people that didn't get laid off, number one, had a positive attitude. Number two, they were versatile. And number three, they were always improving their skills.

What's your attitude like in the workplace? Do other people want to work with you or do they run the other direction when they see you coming? We have to be determined to set our attitude in a positive direction every single day.

Every morning, I've learned to say, "Father, thank You that today is going to be a blessing day and a receiving day, a day where I'll be a blessing to someone and a day where I will receive Your goodness in a greater way." What am I doing? I'm setting the tone for the new day. I'm choosing to have a good attitude.

How flexible are you in the workplace? Are you willing to go the extra mile–even when it's "not your job"? That phrase actually comes from the Bible. Jesus said in Matthew 5:41, "If someone asks you to walk a mile with them, do more. Go two miles." Back in Bible days, by law, when Roman soldiers were walking through a city, they could require a person to carry their armor for one mile.

After that mile, they would have to get someone else. But Jesus said, "If they ask you to do it one mile, do more than expected. Carry it two miles." That's the attitude we need to have. When you're a person of excellence, you do more than expected. You don't take the easy way out. You don't just do the minimum requirement. You go the extra mile.

Are you improving your skill and ability in the workplace? When you have a spirit of excellence, you're always sharpening yourself. You're always looking for new ways to grow. You should not be at the same skill level next year as you are right now. You should be doing something on purpose to increase your ability. You have to be proactive. We cannot sit back and just expect our talent to automatically increase.

Can you take courses on the internet? Do you have a mentor speaking faith into your life? Are you studying the people ahead of you? Are you learning the next position in line? If you'll take these steps to grow, it not only honors God but God will open up the right doors.

I encourage you today, be a person of excellence. Set the tone for your day. Go above and beyond the call of duty. Look for ways to increase your ability and live the life that honors God–the life that God rewards.

Our Greatest Mission Field

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

by Dr. Harold Sala

"Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth." -Psalm 127:4

The world’s greatest mission field is not the Dark Continent of Africa, nor is it the highlands of Papua New Guinea, or the jungles of South America. Are you ready for this?

The greatest mission field today is the hearts of our children. And today forces more sinister and frightening than the vipers of the jungle and more devastating than malaria which no longer responds to medicines are making their bids for the hearts of our children and grandchildren.

Today our children are both our greatest challenge and our greatest mission field. But here is the question: How do we respond to the evil and sinister forces which challenge them? Turn off the TV set. Give them the gift of yourself, and strive to include them in your overloaded schedule. Yes, but even more.

For a long while we parents have depended on others to do what we alone can do. We expect institutions such as schools and churches and organizations to convey values and provide an education framework. We expect that our offspring will absorb whatever is necessary to succeed in life, and so we pay for it—tuition for education, music lessons, karate, ballet and sports. We also provide computers, color television sets, 18-speed bicycles, basketballs and the latest of digital audio equipment. But often neglected are the personal element of parental love and the deeper lessons of what life is all about, including the spiritual.

I’ve often said that values in life are caught—not taught. I still believe that, but I also believe the gift of parental love, the strong kind which includes caring enough to be there, and to provide discipline and guidance until a child is old enough to make good decisions, is the only thing that will get kids through the jungle which is out there.

When a child knows that he or she is really loved and will be accepted regardless of what happens, it gives a youngster stability, which makes it much easier to stand on his own two feet and dare to be different. A parent’s goal should be growing a kid so strong that when you aren’t there, he won’t need you; and that can only be done through patient guidance, discipline, and love.

What is the gift of love? Simply put, it is the gift of yourself. No longer do kids worry much about the Earth’s being incinerated by nuclear fission, nor do many children worry about having enough to eat—though some do. But a lot of children today worry about whether Mommy and Daddy will stay together. The fear of divorce has now become children’s greatest fear. One of the greatest gifts a parent can give his child is to love the child’s mother or dad, as the case may be.

The note left on the teacher’s desk read, “Dear Miss [teacher]… I need a hug. At the end of the day, would you please give me a hug? I know you’d rather be hugging your own children but I’m hurting. Love, Becky.” Becky was an eleven-year-old girl, overweight and desperate for love. Her dad was an attorney whose wife had divorced him and wanted her independence. Becky’s grandmother was raising her and did the best she could.

But there is none who can take the place of your mother or dad. Dr. Ross Campbell, a psychiatrist whose book How to Really Love Your Children, has more than a half-million copies in print, says that he has never treated an adolescent involved in sexual misconduct who felt loved by her parents. Especially important and needful is the love of a dad.

Interestingly enough the first mention of the word love in the Bible was that of a father’s love for his son. The father was Abraham and the son was Isaac. Question: Could Becky be your child, desperately in need of love? Remember, your child may be a mission field. Don’t forget it.

A Flood of Power

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"So [Israel] came up to Baal–perazim, and David smote [the Philistines] there. Then David said, God has broken my enemies by my hand, like the bursting forth of waters. Therefore they called the name of that place Baal–perazim [Lord of breaking through]"  -I Chronicles 14:11, AMP

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Notice, David likened God's power to the bursting forth of waters. In other words, he described it as a flood. He was saying that when the God of the breakthrough shows up and releases His power, it will be like a flood of His goodness, a flood of His favor, a flood of healing, a flood of new opportunity.

Think about how powerful water is. Three or four feet of water can pick up a huge car that weighs thousands of pounds and move it all around. I've seen on the news whole houses floating down the river in big floods. Nothing can stop the force of that water! Anything that's in its way is moved!

You may have difficulties that look extremely large, obstacles that look impassable, dreams that look unobtainable. But know this; when the God of the breakthrough releases a flood of His power, nothing can stop it. You need to get ready not for a trickle, not for a stream, not for a river.

Get ready for a flood of God"s favor, a tidal wave of His goodness, a tsunami of His increase! Dare to believe that God is going to overwhelm you with victory in every area of your life today!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, I invite You to overwhelm me with You today. Take over every area of my life; my thoughts, my attitude, my body. Flood me with Your healing, favor, and strength today as I surrender my entire being to You. Amen.

Faith to Walk Again

by Joel Osteen

I want to share with you a story about a young man who was raised in a small country town. In his early twenties, he married a young girl from the community who was really into fashion–especially high–heeled shoes.

One day after they had gotten married, they were driving home and it was raining. A truck was coming from the other direction, didn't see them, and turned right in front of them. This young man tried to stop, but he couldn't and plowed right into that truck, totaling their vehicle.

The young man couldn't get his door open, so he tried to crawl out the window and encouraged his wife to do the same. She said, "I can't. My legs are hurt." When he looked down, he saw that both of her ankles had been crushed.

They rushed her to a hospital in a larger city and after several days and several surgeries, the doctor told the young couple, "I hate to tell you this, but your wife will never walk again. Her ankles have been too messed up. Maybe we can fit her with some kind of brace to help stabilize her. But she'll be confined to a wheelchair the rest of her life."

You can imagine how devastated they were. That young man took his wife home and physically carried her inside. He gently set her on the bed, looked her in the eyes and said, "Listen here, Honey. Everything that man just said to us I want you to ignore. You will walk again. I don't know if it will take a month or a year. It may take twenty years. But you are going to walk again."

Sometimes, when the young man would come home from work, he would find his wife sitting in the closet. She would scoot herself in there just to stare at her beautiful shoes. She was so down and discouraged. He would pick her up and say, "Okay, Honey. Let's try. Take a step." One step after another, month after month they kept trying, they kept believing, they kept releasing their faith and thanking God for her healing.

Eventually, she got to a place where she could wear tennis shoes, then flat–soled shoes, then shoes with a small heel. She even got to where she could wear her beloved high–heeled shoes once again. Today, not only can she walk, she can run; she can jump; she can dance. She's stronger now than she was twenty years ago when it first happened.

Friend, maybe you are able to physically walk today, but has life knocked you down in another area? Do you feel stuck or unable to move forward somehow? I believe, just like this young couple, God wants to give you the faith to walk again. He wants to give you the faith to pursue your dreams again; to have healthy relationships and enjoy every aspect of your life. He wants to see every desire of your heart fulfilled to His glory.

No matter what anyone has told you, open your heart today and dare to believe that God will do the impossible. Focus your heart and mind on His Word and watch those seeds of faith grow until you can walk, run, jump, and dance in every area of your life again!

God of the Breakthrough

Monday, June 15, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"…the Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like the bursting out of great waters…" - (II Samuel 5:20, NLT)

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

A breakthrough is simply a sudden burst of God’s favor. It’s an explosion of His goodness. It’s when suddenly, God releases His power in such a way that it overwhelms you and drives out your enemies!

Maybe you’ve been praying about a child for years, and suddenly, they get back on the right course. That’s a breakthrough. Or you were trying to get in to a certain college. They said they were full, but suddenly, they call you back and say they have room for you.

That’s another breakthrough. Perhaps you’ve struggled in your finances for a long time then you get a good break or a promotion. Now it’s not a struggle anymore. Those are all breakthroughs.

No matter what you’ve been facing, no matter how impossible things look, know this; the God of the breakthrough wants to visit your house. Your part is to be ready—to look for His favor and goodness. Remember, God rewards the people who seek after Him.

So keep expecting and keep believing because the God of the breakthrough is ready to overwhelm you with His goodness today!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, today I am expecting Your goodness. I am looking for Your favor. I’m trusting that You, the God of the breakthrough, are working mightily on my behalf. Help me to live a life pleasing to You as I wait for Your hand to move in my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Turn Away From Discouraging Voices

Saturday, June 13, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"And David turned away from Eliab..." -(I Samuel 17:30, AMP)

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

When David was a shepherd boy, his father asked him to take lunch to his brothers out on the battlefield. When he arrived, he heard Goliath taunting and challenging the people of God. David asked the men standing around, “What is the prize for defeating this giant?”

They said, “The reward is one of the king’s daughters in marriage and no more taxes.” That got David’s attention. He knew this was a battle worth fighting.

When David’s older brother, Eliab, heard him talking about fighting the giant, he tried to embarrass him. In front of all those men Eliab said, “David, what are you doing out here? And what have you done with those few sheep our father left you with?” He tried to make him feel small. He was saying, “David, you’re not important. You’ll never do anything great.” But I love the way David responded.

The Scripture says that David turned and walked away from Eliab. I believe one of the main reasons that David was a champion is because he knew which battles to fight. He knew to turn away from discouraging voices so he could focus his energy on the real battle.

Today, what are the discouraging voices coming against you? Choose to turn away from those distractions so you can turn toward the victory God has in store for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father God, I humbly come to You today releasing all my cares and concerns and focusing on the plan You have for me. Help me to turn away from the discouraging voices so that I can walk in the victory You have for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The Death of Good Intentions

Friday, June 12, 2009

by Dr. Harold Sala

But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'’ - Luke 12:20

One of the illusions that we live with is that there is always plenty of time later on, so we procrastinate, full of good intentions, thinking that we’ll do that later. Take for example the secretary who worked for many years for the Eastman Kodak Company.

She never married. Her nieces and nephews were very special to her. When Dick was struggling to get through college and seminary, she sent checks quite often. He was the son she never had, and when he went overseas as a missionary, her love and respect for him and his lovely wife only increased.

Each year as part of her salary package, she was given stock, and those were the years when the Kodak Company was growing and expanding. “You hang on to that stock,” people told her. “It will be worth a lot someday.” They were right, too. And at her death, she wanted some of that stock to go to her nephew along with other members of the family. She thought she had lots of time to eventually draft a will. But she was wrong. Felled by illness, she quickly lost strength and life failed her.

How much did the family receive? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The state stepped in and froze her accounts and since there were no direct relatives, her estate was claimed by the government.

Good intentions just aren’t enough. The nephew who became a pastor of a large, thriving church was reminded of that truth a second time. Adjacent to the church property was a large empty lot owned by a businessman who attended the church. “Pastor,” he used to tell Dick, “I want the church to have that property for future expansion.” No one doubted his good intention. But he never told his attorney, or never signed the deed which would pass that property on to his church.

When he suddenly dropped dead of heart failure, his good intentions were quickly forgotten.
Zora was much the same way. This little lady never married and had no family, but she had inherited property which eventually became quite valuable. She supported her church and sent small checks to Guidelines.

When she learned what we were doing, she kept telling her best friend. “I want to include that organization in my will.” Only the week before her heart attack, she told her friend, “I’ve got to get down to my attorney and include Guidelines in my will.”

You guessed it. Again good intentions fell short of accomplishment. Here’s a rule of thumb to follow: “Do your givin’ while you’re livin’ so you’re knowin’ where it’s goin’.” At least, make the decisions regarding your estate, the ones which you want to take place at your death, now.

“Just a minute,” you may be thinking, “I’d prefer not to think about that.” Of course. Who wouldn’t? The American humorist Mark Twain said that he wished he knew where he was going to die because he would never go near the place. Obviously.

A wealthy industrialist who was suffering from tuberculosis left his home and had his chauffeur drive him west where he came into a little town in the desert. Pulling up in front of the general store, he lowered his window and addressed several of the men sitting in front of the post office.

“What’s the death rate out here, Gentlemen?” he inquired. Looking at the large Cadillac and the driver in the front seat, they knew this man had money. But that wasn’t the issue. One man cleared his throat and replied, “Same as it is back where you came from. Just one to a person.” It’s still true.

The Bible says it is appointed unto men once to die but after that comes the judgment. May God help us to live with eternity’s values in view and consider that we have a gift from God which eventually must be left behind.

Keep Your Eye on the Prize

Thursday, June 11, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but [only] one receives the prize? So run [your race] that you may lay hold [of the prize] and make it yours" -(I Corinthians 9:24, AMP)

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Many of the challenges that come our way in life are simply distractions to try to lure us from our destiny. Every day we have the opportunity to get upset—maybe someone is talking about you, or a competitor at work is spreading rumors, or a friend says something that they shouldn’t have.

When this happens, you have to ask yourself, “If I engage in this battle and spend my time and energy trying to defend myself or trying to prove that I’m right, if I win this battle, what is the prize going to be?” For example, if someone cuts you off in traffic and you get all upset and cut him off in return, how is that going to benefit you?

You don’t even know the person! What’s the point? There are no spoils. That’s not a battle that is worth your energy.

The reason many people are missing out on God’s best is they’re distracted fighting battles that don’t really matter, trying to prove themselves to others, trying to win over their critics, playing up to someone, trying to get their approval.

Instead, choose to keep your focus and attention on becoming more like Jesus so you can fulfill the destiny He has prepared for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, today I choose to refocus on You. I am determined to overlook offenses and choose my battles wisely. I will run the race You have set before me with purpose so I can lay hold of the prize You have for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Choose Obedience

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"Give heed to Him, listen to and obey His voice..." - (Exodus 23:21, AMP)

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Did you know that when God spoke to Noah about building the ark, it had never even rained before? Can you imagine that?

Noah knew people were going to make fun of him or call him crazy. I’m sure he had every opportunity to talk himself out of it. He could have come up with plenty of excuses. But Noah didn’t do that. He recognized that God had asked him to do a difficult thing, and he chose obedience.

Noah didn’t run from the challenge; he chose to believe God. Noah’s obedience is what opened the door for God to supernaturally empower him to fulfill his destiny. Now he is one of the great heroes of faith.

If you will decide to do the difficult things God is telling you to do—even when it looks impossible—if you’ll choose to be obedient, then God will do more than you could ask or think. He’ll take you places that you’ve never dreamed of.

He’ll bring up out of you gifts and talents that you never even knew you had. He’ll empower you to fulfill your destiny, and who knows, you may become the next hero of faith.

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, thank You for calling and equipping me. I choose to be obedient to Your Word and follow Your voice. I give You first place in every area of my life and trust that You are empowering me to do Your will. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Be Determined

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

“[We pray] that you may be invigorated and strengthened with all power according to the might of His glory, [to exercise] every kind of endurance and patience (perseverance and forbearance) with joy," (Colossians 1:11, AMP).

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Do you know what causes God to act on your behalf? Do you know what gets His attention? God is not moved by our needs. He’s not moved by whining or complaining. He’s not moved by a “poor me” mentality. No, God is moved by our faith in Him. We have to be determined to stand on God’s Word no matter what is going on around us.

Remember, God promises in His Word that He will fight our battles, but understand that it’s not going to happen automatically. We have to do our part. We have to dig our heels in with an attitude of faith and exercise endurance, patience, and perseverance. We have to be determined to stand strong in faith and face those challenges that come against us.

Just like the scripture says, I pray that today you are strengthened with His power to exercise endurance, perseverance, and patience so that you can stand strong and be determined to take hold of every promise He has in store for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, thank You for giving me a measure of faith that grows as I receive Your Word. Today I declare that I am determined to put You first and stand on Your promises so that I can live the life of victory You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen

Quit Often To Succeed In Life

Monday, June 8, 2009

by Bo Sanchez

One day, Max, a criminal in death row was about to be executed.

The warden was extra kind that day, so he asked him, “Max, for your last three meals, you can ask for anything you want.   What do you want for breakfast?”

Max said, “Pancit (Local noodles). For long life.”

The warden smiled and said, “I don’t think it will work. But here’s the pancit anyway.” Max ate with gusto.

After a few hours, the warden asked, “What’s your second meal?”

“Spaghetti. Also for long life,” Max said.

The warden laughed as he shook his head, “Max, this won’t give you long life, but anyway, here it is…” He gave him spaghetti and Max devoured it.

After a few hours, the warden asked, “What’s your third meal? Sotanghon?” (Another local noodle dish.)

“No,” Max laughed, “noodle dishes have not been working for me.”

“So what will your last meal be?”

Take Hold of Your Freedom

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery" -(Galatians 5:1, NAS).

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

So many people today are missing out on the freedom that God has in store for them simply because they’re always running from their adversities. They’re continually running from their challenges or difficulties, content to stay right where they are.

And I know that it’s sometimes difficult to stand against the enemy. It can be uncomfortable to confront our challenges in order to take hold of freedom. But I believe that it is actually more difficult to run from our challenges than it is to stand and face them.

See, if you’ll face your challenges, then it will only be a temporary difficulty. But if you spend your whole life running from your challenges, it’s as if they never go away—like a ball and chain around your ankle, those challenges will follow you everywhere you go.

But that doesn’t have to be you! Instead, stand firm on God’s promises. Declare His Word over your life. Ask God to give you wisdom and direction as you face the difficulties in your life so that you can take hold of the freedom He has prepared for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, thank You for freedom through Christ Jesus. I choose today to stand firm on Your promises. I choose an attitude of faith and expectancy knowing that You are leading me in paths of victory all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Why Israel and Armageddon?

Saturday, June 6, 2009

by Dr. Harold Sala

This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land. I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel…” Ezekiel 37:21

For a moment, think about the events that have taken place in our world since I began broadcasting in 1963. Communism collapsed in the former USSR. The Berlin Wall came down, and the two Germanys that were divided by ideology and economy were merged into one very powerful country. Iraq invaded Kuwait, holding the nations of the world as hostage. The US invaded Iraq twice. India and Pakistan both produced nuclear capabilities and Iran is standing on the nuclear threshold.
And now in the 21st century, we have to ask ourselves, “What will happen in the near future? If things change as much in the next decade as they have the past one, could this well take us to the end of the age and the end of the world?”

One of the most interested players on the international chessboard where oil derricks, rather than knights and rooks, are players, is the nation of Israel traditional enemy of the Iraqis and Iranians. Ancient Babylon was the home of modern Iraq, and the Jewish people will never forget how their predecessors, under the leadership of King Nebuchadnezzar, laid siege to Jerusalem in 605 BC, and eventually destroyed the city in 586 B.C., plundering it and burning the temple, taking the finest young men in chains back to Babylon.

Read the Book of Jeremiah, where the prophet laments the sins of his people. To exiles in Babylon, Jeremiah says that God will restore His people after 70 years and then says,"'I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, `plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope’" (Jeremiah 19:11).

Never was hope any lower or more desperate for the Jewish people than in the concentration camps of Europe, where six million Jewish people faced annihilation and death. Yet from the despair of the crematoriums a nation was again born, something that the prophets of Israel foretold long ago. Make a note of Isaiah 11:11, where God said that He would bring His people back into the land the second time, gathering them from the four corners of the world.

The re-establishment of the modern nation of Israel is one of the most significant prophecies which has been fulfilled in our day, when a nation was reborn against all odds. Today Israel, having fought for its very existence, is more than a disinterested observer in the present Middle East crisis.

When Israel felt that Iraq was about to begin production of atomic weapons, they neutralized the plant with well placed bombs. Now Iran poses a more formidable threat than Iraq ever was. When God told His people, "I know the plans that I have for you...” those plans included the descendants of those who heard those words, men and women who live today in modern Israel; and how those plans unfold will be completely a matter of divine sovereignty and direction.

No matter how chaotic the situation, God hasn't turned His back or forgotten His people, no matter where they are. Even though the hands on the doomsday clock are perilously close to midnight, God is still in control.

Through all of this, friend, do you have that confidence? That God, your heavenly Father, the King of kings and Lord of lords, is fully in charge, and no matter how desperate the situation, He has a plan for your life personally? When He is your Father, you can trust Him. Think about it.

What's Your Focus In The Time Of Trouble?

Friday, June 5, 2009

by Dr. Harold Sala

"Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees. But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed." -Job 4:4-5

When difficulties come, on what do you focus? Some look back. They are the ones who try to drive looking in the rear view mirror. Their thoughts are consumed with two questions which, like a broken record, play over and over again: “What if?” or “If only?” “What if I had not made that investment? What if I had listened to my mom or dad?

Some focus entirely on the future when difficulties arise. And what’s wrong with that? Isn’t goal setting important? Yes. Certainly, if you have no thought of where you want to go, you’ll never get there, for sure.

But focusing entirely on tomorrow is daydreaming, or living in a fantasy world divorced from reality. Tomorrow is uncertain, and when it arrives, God is going to be there; so I have to leave many things in His hands, confident that when tomorrow gets here, God will show me what to do.

Some focus on their circumstances, looking around them. They are the ones who, when trouble comes, are looking for an excuse, a scapegoat, someone whom they can blame for their failures. I’m thinking of a woman who seemed to have been baptized in Teflon.

When her computer wouldn’t work she would assail, “Someone did something with my computer,” when, in fact, no one had touched her computer. I heard complaints about her mother, her husband, certainly her church, and the set of circumstances that had dealt her a bad deal in life. Never would she say, “I accept responsibility for this,” or “This is my fault.”

When trouble comes, don’t look around you, striving to pin the blame on others or on circumstances. Some things just happen, and the key is not fixing blame but how you respond and how you get on with your life.

Some look inward when problems come. This is not altogether bad. At times we need to examine our motives and take a look within. But living in a world of introspection, always examining our thoughts and feelings, often leaves us wounded and hurting. Paul took a look within and didn’t much like what he saw. Read Romans 7 and see if you can relate to his comments that seemingly what he wanted to do, he didn’t do, and what he didn’t want to do ended up being exactly what he did. If you take a look within, do learn from it and then move on.

All right, you may be saying, if I shouldn’t look back, or I shouldn’t look to the future, nor look around me or within, what should be my focus? Ah, I’m glad you asked. Here it is: When difficulty knocks at your door, look up into the face of Jesus, realizing that God can be your source of strength, your help, your defender, and your deliverer. He will never disappoint you or leave you in the lurch. Looking to Him you will never be disappointed.

Take time to read through the book of Psalms and notice how David and the men who penned these marvelous expressions of faith responded to trouble. They knew that the Lord is a rock, a fortress, a hiding place, a deliverer, a shield, a stronghold, a friend, a companion, and a helper in the time of need.

Your focus in the time of difficulty will determine both how you weather the storm and where you go after the storm is over. How much better to learn that God will walk with you through the valley than to wonder if He is strong enough, sufficient enough, caring enough to meet you at the time of your need. Yes, how much better indeed!

Stand and See!

Thursday, June 4, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"...stand and see the salvation of the Lord..." (II Chroniclees 20:17, NAS)

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Is there something difficult in your life that you are avoiding? So many people today run from anything that’s hard. They run from their problems. They run from responsibility. They run from people they don’t like. They run from the past. They run from anything that makes them uncomfortable.

Instead of facing the issues and dealing with them, they just take the easy way out and go down the path of least resistance. But if you’re going to live in victory the way God intends, you have to learn how to face your challenges head on.

Notice today’s verse doesn’t say, “Keep running until you see the salvation of the Lord.” It doesn’t say, “Bury your head in the sand until God delivers you.” No, God wants us to stand strong, set our faces like a flint, and fight the good fight of faith. And the good news is you don’t have to do it in your own strength! He’s equipped you with His supernatural power to overcome every obstacle.

Make the decision today to stand strong and face the challenges in your life. Be bold and dare to conquer! As you stand in faith, you will see the salvation, the deliverance of Almighty God in every area of your life!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, search my heart. Show me any area in my life where I may be hiding. I choose today to stand in faith and invite You to move mightily on my behalf. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

You and God are a Majority

Wednesday, June 3, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"...If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31, KJV)

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

So often when difficulties come, people tend to feel overwhelmed, unequipped, or outnumbered. They shrink back or look for an easy way out or a place to hide. But that’s not God´s best for us. He never intended for us to be consumed by our challenges; He intends for us to overcome our challenges!

If you´re facing a difficulty today, it´s time to dig your heels in, stand strong, and show the enemy what you´re made of! Remember, you aren´t alone in the fight; God is with you. He´s promised to never leave you nor forsake you.

Just like the scripture says, if God is for you who can be against you? Friend, you and God are a majority. There´s no weapon, no enemy, no challenge, no disease, no failure, there´s nothing that can overtake you when God is on your side!

I encourage you today; choose an attitude of faith and victory. Keep declaring His promises over your life. Be bold and stand strong because God promises that He has victory in store for the upright. As you keep that attitude of faith, you´ll rise above those difficulties and walk in the freedom He´s prepared for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness to me. Thank You for equipping me and filling me with Your joy, strength, and boldness. I choose to trust You, to stand on Your Word and look for the victory You have in store for me. In Jesus´ Name. Amen.

God's Appointed Time

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE

"For the vision is yet for an appointed time…it will surely come; it will not be behindhand on its appointed day" -(Habakkuk 2:3, AMP).

TODAY'S WORD from Joel and Victoria

God is looking for people who have a made-up mind; people who will trust His timing. You may not see His promises happen overnight, but they will happen.

In the Bible, Abraham waited 20 years to have a son and see his promise come to pass. Moses waited 40 years to fulfill his purpose and lead the children of Israel out of captivity.

You might say, “Joel, I’ve been waiting for a year, and I don’t see anything happening.” No, something is happening. Right now, God is working behind the scenes in your life. He is arranging the right people, the right breaks, and the right opportunities.

Today’s scripture tells us that at the appointed time, the promise will come to pass, and it will not be one second late! When is the appointed time?

It’s when God knows the timing is best for you. When you understand and accept this principle, it takes all the pressure off. It’s a very freeing way to live knowing that as long as we stay in faith, God will release His favor, His increase, His restoration, and His healing at exactly the right time in our lives!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, thank You for working behind the scenes in my life. I trust that the appointed time for me is on its way. I am content in You, knowing that You have a good plan for my future. I bless you today and always. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
